Dr. Somnath Dasgupta
PhD Fellows
Somnath Dasgupta is a Scientist – Chemistry Services at GRK Labs. He is expertise in Carbohydrate Chemistry and Enzymatic Reactions, Phosphorylations, Fluorinations, Bioconjugation techniques, handling and doing chemistry with Proteins and Peptides. Somnath received his PhD in Carbohydrate Chemistry from Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI, Lucknow) and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (Kolkata) under the supervision of Prof. Balaram Mukhopadhyay. During his PhD, Somnath worked on the “Total synthesis of biologically active glycoconjugates”. After receiving his PhD, Somnath moved to University of Toronto, Canada for postdoctoral position with Prof Mark Nitz and worked on “Design and Synthesis of Scyllo inositol based libraries as potent inhibitor of Beta-Amyloid fibrils associated with Alzheimer’s disease”. Then Somnath moved to Alberta Glycomics Centre at University of Alberta, Canada and associated with Prof. David Bundle. He worked on synthesis of polymeric oligosaccharide ligands targeting Shiga toxin. He also gained expertise in areas like bioconjugation techniques, glycan array generation, handling and doing chemistry with proteins and peptides.
Dr. Bimalendu Roy
Bimalendu Roy is working as a Principal Investigator at Syngene International Private Limited. He is a synthetic organic chemistry
by training and has expertise in Carbohydrate Chemistry, Library Synthsis, Enzymatic Reactions, Reaction kineties, Design of Experiments (DoE), Quality by design(QbD) and Process Research and Development. Bimalendu did his masters from Indian Institute of Engineering, Science and Technology, Shibpur. He received his Ph.D in Carbohydrate Chemistry fromCentral Drug Research Institute CDRI, Lucknow) and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (Kolkata) under the supervision of Balaram Mukhopadhyay. During his Ph.D, Bimalendu worked on the Synthesis of biologically active glycoconjugates and sugar heterocycicrybride. After receiving his Ph.D., Bimalendu moved to University of Nantes, France for his first postdoctoral research with Prof. Claude Rabiller and worked on Novel and convergent synthesis of different analogues of glycosphingolipids, ß-galac
tosylceramide. Then Bimalendu moved to University of Pittsburgh at Pittsburgh, USA for second postdoctoral research and
associated with Prof. Xiny" Liu. At Liu's lab he worked on Photo redox catalyst and during his postdoc tenure he developec
three photo redox catalyst 2012, he returned back to India and joined Daiichi Sankyo India as a Senior research scientist in
Medicinal chemistry devisien in early 2016, he got opportunity to work process research development at Syngene and joined
chemical development as a Principal Investigator.
Dr. Vishal Kumar Rajput
Vishal Rajput is a Business Development professlonal with Merck KGaA (Process Solutions), leading technocommercials activities in Asta Pacifie region. In his current role and responsibilities with Merck he ts responsible for products and Services Sales - Pharma Ingredients. Vishal received his Ph.D. in Carbohydrate Chemistry trom Central Drug Research Institute Lucknow whereas a part ot ph.D, assignments were completed at indian Institute of Sclence Education and Research (Kolkata) under the supervision of Balaram Mukhopadhyay. During his Ph.D., Vishal worked on the "Total synthesis of biologically active Oligosaccharides and methodology developments in Carbohydrate synthesis". After recelving his Ph.D. Vishal moved to Lund University Sweden for his first postdoc position with Prof Ulf Nilsson and worked on "Design and Synthesis of Galectins inhibitors". He has got one leadcandidate, it is being studied in elinical trial Phase-l out-licenced to US multinational. In his second postdoc, Vishal worked with Prof David Bundle at Alberta Glycomics Centre, University of Alberta, Canada. Besides academic research, Vishal also worked for Indian Pharma Industry for Drug Discovery and Development programs mainly focused in services to global innovators companies, in his association with Neuland Labs and GVK Bio-Sciences as Scientific Group leader, he was leading a group of 15-20 Chemists on different programs. Vishal got professional education in Patent law and Project Management, he completed PG diploma in patent law from Nalsar Law University Hyderabad and Project Management certification from PMI.
Dr. Santanu Mandal
Santanu completed his Bachelors' from Narendrapur Ramakrishna Mission Residential College, University of Calcutta in 2004 and got. his Masters' in Chemistry from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi in 2006. In 2007 he qualified for the Junior Research
Fellowship (CSIR, New Delhi) and joined for his Ph. D. under the supervision of Balaram Mukhopadhyay at the Medicinal and Process Chemistry Division, CDRI, Lucknow. In 2008 he moved to IISER Kolkata and completed his Ph.D.from Sweet Lab, ISER
Kolklata in 2011. During his Ph. D. tenure he worked on synthesis of oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates. After the completion
of his doctoral degree, Santanu joined Lund University, Sweden as Research Associate under "Swedish Institute Scholarship Programs, Guest Scholarship Program for Ph.D. and post-doctoral studies in Sweden". He worked under Prof. Ulf J. Nilsson till 2014 before joining the University of Manchester as a Postdoctoral Research Associate under Prof. Sabine Flitsch. In 2016 he joined GVK Biosciences Private Limited, Hyderabad as Scientific Manager. He is a Lifetime member of Association of Carbohydrate Chemists and Technologists (India) ACCTI and a Member of the 'IB Carb network, Glycoscience Tools for Biotechnology and Bioenergy, a BBSRC NIBB' United Kingdon. He is a reviewer of Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry and Journal of Nutrition and Food Technology.

Dr. Somnath Mukherjee
Dr. Mukherjee completed his B. Sc. from J.K. College, Purulia and M.Sc from The University of Burdwan in 2007and 2009 respectively. He qualified NET-JRF (CSIR) in 2008 following which he joined Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata for his Doctorate Degree under the supervision of Dr. B. Mukhopadhyay. His Ph. D research was focussed on synthetic and supramolecular carbohydrate chemistry. During his PhD tenure, he achieved ACCT (I) Young Scientist award-2011 and also some other awards by presenting his research work in some conferences. He completed his doctoral degree in 2012 and after that he immediately joined IISER Thiruvananthapuram as a research associate and worked there on supramolecular carbohydrate Chemistry (topochemical polymerization). In Aug, 2013 he moved to Shaanxi Normal University, Xian, China and worked there as an Postdoctoral Research Scientist for one year on sugar based soft materials with a famous professor of China. In Sep, 2014 he came back India and joined IISER Kolkata as a Research Associate and worked on Carbohydrate crystals and gels with Prof. C. M. Reddy. Currently Dr. Mukherjee has joined Academy of Technology as an Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Chemistry in West Bengal.
Dr. Rituparna Das
IISER Kolkata Postdoctotal Fellow
Rituparna completed her high school from Ballygunge Shiksha Sadan in 2006 and B. Sc. in 2009 from St. Xaviers College, Kolkata (Autonomous) under University of Calcutta. After her graduation, she joined Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Kolkata (IISER K) as a student of the first batch of Integrated Ph. D programme in 2009. After completing her MS part in 2011, she did her Doctorate Thesis under the supervision of Dr. B. Mukhopadhyay and obtained her Ph. D in 2015. Her Ph.D. research was focused on synthesis of Bacterial Oligosaccharides and Magnetic Glyconanoparticles for potential biological applications. After her doctorate degree she is presently a post doctoral fellow in Sweet Lab. Her current research is involved in the synthesis of biologically applicable dendrimers and development of synthetic methodologies.
Dr. Darshita Budhadev
Darshita completed her high schooling from Mary Immacuate School in 2006. She completed her B. Sc. from Krish Nath College and M.Sc from Unversity of Kalyani in 2009 and 2011 respectively. She qualified NET-JRF (UGC) in 2011 following which she joined Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata for her Doctorate Degree under the supervision of Dr. B. Mukhopadhyay. Her Ph. D research is focussed on synthesis of biologically active oligosaccharides from plant and animal origin.
Dr. Kumar Bhaskar Pal
Bhaskar completed his high school from Birati High School in 2006. He then completed his B.Sc from Dumdum Motijheel College under University of Calcutta and M. Sc from West Bengal State University in 2009 and 2011 respectively. He qualified for NET-JRF (UGC) in 2011 following which he joined Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata for her Doctorate degree under the supervision of Dr. B. Mukhopadhyay. His Ph. D work is focussed on synthesis of biologically active oligosaccharides and insights of crystalline galactose derivatives.
Dr. Ankita Mitra
Ankita completed her high school from Julien Day School in 2008 and B.Sc from Bethune College under University of Kolkata in 2011. After her graduation she joined Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata as an Integrated Ph. D student in 2011. After completing her MS part in 2013, she joined the Sweet Lab for her Ph. D under the supervision of Dr. B. Mukhopadhyay in 2013. Her Ph.D. research is focused mainly on synthesis of Bacterial and plant oligosaccharides.
Dr. Vikramjit Sarkar
Vikramjit completed his high school from Siliguri Boys' High School in 2007 and B.Sc from Siliguri College under University of North Bengal in 2011. After his graduation he joined Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata as an Integrated Ph. D student in 2011. After completing his MS part in 2013, he joined the Sweet Lab for his Ph. D under the supervision of Dr. B. Mukhopadhyay in 2013. His Ph.D. research is focused mainly on synthesis of Bacterial and plant oligosaccharides.
Dr. Anirban Adak
Anirban did his bachelors' from Ghatal R. S. Mahavidyalaya and masters' from Midnapur College (Vidyasagar University). He has joined the Sweet Lab in 2016 as Junior Research Fellow. His Ph.D. research work is focussed on total synthesis of oligosaccharides and supramolecular chemistry of carbohydrates.

Postdoctoral Fellows
Aritra graduated high school from Julien Day School, Kalyani in 2005 and then BSc. from Barrackpore Rashtraguru Surendranath College in 2008. He pursued his masters from Jadavpur University and graduated in 2010 after which he continued his higher studies under the supervision of Prof. Rina Ghosh for his PhD till 2017. His thesis was focused on oligosaccharide synthesis and development of bacterial rare sugar derivatives. Presently he has joined the Sweet Lab as a postdoctoral fellow to pursue further research, which is focused on the synthesis of rare sugar derivatives and their application to oligosaccharide synthesis.
